NEW HORIZONS SERVICE DOGS NEED YOUR HELP with advancing their mission to provide high quality service dogs at NO COST to disabled children and adults in Florida, including veterans.
$ Donations are always need! BUT you can also help with puppy raising!
PUPPY RAISING is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have doing something for someone else. Puppy raisers are volunteers who commit to raise, train, and socialize a puppy for four to six months for each rotation with weekly obedience classes and public outings.
PRISON PUP PRISON comes next. Teaming up with the Florida Department of Corrections, New Horizons Services Dogs has created Prison Pup Programs within Florida State Prisons.
Once at their assigned prison, the inmates begin providing intermediate training and advanced training skills. They are often rotated between prisons and puppy raisers for more socialization until the dogs are transferred out to New Horizons special-skills trainers for additional skill acquisition and eventual placement with a person who is living with a disability.
The inmates benefit from participating in the program by acquiring skills that can improve the chance of success when they re-enter society, Enhanced self-esteem, confidence, interpersonal skills, and life skills can help deter their return to the prison system.
ADVANCED TRAING continues once the dogs come back from their puppy raisers. Professional trainers work with these dogs to achieve the high levels of commands needed by their disabled recipients.
The dogs must be reliable, willing and enjoy working. At the end of this period the dogs are evaluated for performance and temperament, and then matched with an appropriate recipient.
Team training is when the recipient and their new dog begin training together. Upon successful completion of the training, the service dog and recipient graduate together.
Once placed, the service dog will increase the client’s self-sufficiency and independence by opening doors, pulling wheelchairs, retrieving dropped items, providing stability & support, and improve their overall quality of life.
I invite you to join us the enterprise of love! ~Stephen
