911 4 HNC literally means “Help for Head and Neck Cancer.”
It is a unique fund because all of the money raised by 9114HNC goes directly to patients who have or have had Head and Neck Cancer (HNC). Funds raised go directly to people (individuals and families) in the Greater Metropolitan DC Area in the form of grants. There are no restrictions on how the funds can be used. They can use it for what they need most. Patients typically use funds for transportation to radiation appointments, groceries or to make ends meet because they have lost their job.
Since it's inception in 2009, 9114HNC has helped hundreds of patients and their families fight head and neck cancer and connect to a larger community, who are just like them, providing them with courage, hope and above all, unconditional love.
Background
Courage Unmasked: 911 4 HNC was conceived by Cookie Kerxton while she was undergoing radiation treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). She is an artist who wanted to find a way to ease the financial burden on other HNC patients who could not afford the many types of additional expenses incurred throughout and after treatment for HNC. Cookie's idea for helping other patients was to have artists transform radiation masks worn by head and neck cancer patients into fine art sculptures and auction them.
The monies raised from that first auction started the 9114HNC fund.
