Manu Sanchez

Transplant Type: Liver

What if you were living on borrowed time?

Manu Sanchez, has a new lease on life. In 2013, when he was only 13 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer (hepatocarcinoma). The following year, it had spread to his brain, and by 2016 to his lungs. Manu underwent immunotherapy as well as surgery, and thankfully beat the cancer. Unfortunately, the treatments damaged his liver, and by 2018 he had developed cirrhosis of the liver. Manu’s illness caused him a lot of pain and discomfort, and took a toll on his quality of life. Doctors said a liver transplant was critical. Manu received a transplant on May 20, 2020!

Manu is thankful for the love and support of his family and friends during this difficult time. He has relied so much on his family, and it has brought them closer and shown them how resilient they are. Manu is now a college student and wants to make films someday. He enjoys cooking, painting, and reading, and once he recovers he hopes to swim and travel. Manu is ready to put his health issues behind him, feel better, and be able to live his life to the fullest. But right now, he needs your help.

Unfortunately, Manu’s new life comes at a very high price.

The average liver transplant costs more than $878,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, Manu still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he needs follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. Manu and his family live 460 miles from his transplant center, and have had to temporarily relocate to be nearby while he recovers. As a result, they are incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Manu.

If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Illinois Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Manu Sanchez” in the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
