"The kid's excitement for the game is incredible. Bringing the game of soccer to our kids, and showing them that we care, are all part of what makes my job so rewarding" .  Chris (a local coordinator, coach and role model).

One would think that soccer, the worlds most popular sport, would flourish in Washington D.C. - a city with the world at its fingertips. However, in the inner city areas of D.C., soccer is traditionally unknown.

Unfortunately, Washington D.C.’s challenges stretch far beyond a lack in soccer culture.  In the District of Columbia nearly 1 out of 5 people live at or below the poverty line, making D.C. the jurisdiction with the third highest poverty rate in the country.  The prospect for D.C.’s youth is even more bleak.  The District has the highest poverty rate amongst children in the country. (U.S. census bureau, 2005 American Community Survey)  All that adds up to a lack of oppurtunities for D.C's youngsters.

Out of this context, D.C. United , the city's professional soccer team, was founded on a vision not only to win championships, but also to serve the community. In 2002, United for D.C ., United's charitable arm, was established to provide children in the greater D.C. area with educational and sport opportunities.

United for D.C. has three signature programs all operating in the greater Washington D.C. area:

United Soccer Club : introduces the sport of Soccer to the youth in the inner-city and underprivileged communities.

Kicks for Kids: provides the game-day experience for thousands of urban, inner-city and under-served youth each season.

United Reads: supports childhood literacy and a healthy lifestyles initative through partnerships with neighboring elementary schools and local health care centers

Through these programs United for D.C. has provided thousands of children with opportunities to improve on the pitch and in life.  Please consider us for a donation as we try to expand our programming into more at-risk communities.
