Michael Kutschera
Transplant Type: Lung
Eight years ago Michael Kutschera was diagnosed with a terminal lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It is not known what causes this disease. What is known is that it relentlessly scars the lungs, robbing the person of the ability to breathe. Michael was left being able to only walk short distances with oxygen, unable to travel to see his grandchildren and unable participate in the activities that give life meaning. The disease progressed to a point where his doctors said a transplant was critical for his survival. Thankfully, Michael received a lung transplant on August 14, 2018.
The journey following Michael's transplant will be arduous. Fortunately, he is surrounded by a loving family: His adoring wife Jan of 50 years, four children, seven grandchildren, extended family and close friends. Michael looks forward to the day when he can once again walk free from the tether of the oxygen tank, travel with Jan to once again be in the loving arms of family, and maybe even swing a golf club. But right now, he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Michael’s new life comes at a very high price. The average lung transplant costs more than $785,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Michael lives 60 miles from his transplant center, and prior to his transplant he had to travel there four times per week for pulmonary rehabilitation. Michael has now temporarily relocated to be near the transplant center while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
