Michael Moffitt
Transplant Type: Heart
Michael Moffitt is awaiting a new lease on life. Around 10 years ago, he started suffering from heart issues. He has since been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and congestive heart failure. His diagnoses came as a shock, as there is no family history of these conditions. Unfortunately, these illnesses have caused further damage in the past decade, as Michael is also fighting cardiomyopathy, abnormal heart rate, and kidney disease, amongst others. He currently has a defibrillator in place, and doctors now say a heart transplant is critical to his survival.
During this difficult time, Michael is grateful for the love and support of his wife of nearly 34 years, Jerry, and their family and friends. Together, Michael and Jerry have a son, Blake, who has given them two grandchildren, Noah and Madison, with his wife Cortney. Michael’s illness has prevented him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be but, as a silver lining, it has brought the whole family closer together. When he feels able, Michael enjoys going to the lake with his family and friends. He can still boat and fish, but can’t ride Jet Skis like he used to. He also enjoys riding motorcycles, mechanical work, home remodeling, and woodworking. While he can’t do as much as he’d like, Michael has a wonderful group of family and friends who are always willing to lend him a hand.
Michael has also had to slow down at work. Michael used to be quite active at his job at OG&E but has had to slow down considerably since being added to the transplant list. Moving forward, he will likely have to take time off work as a precautionary measure and, of course, when he finally receives his new heart. More than anything, Michael looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow him to get his life back and do more of the things he likes to do—spending time with his family and friends, as well as being active and helpful in his everyday life. But right now, he needs your help.
The average heart transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Michael. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to National Foundation for Transplants, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Michael Moffitt” on the memo line.
