Michael Yates

Transplant Type: Kidney

Michael Yates is fighting for his life. He was diagnosed with kidney failure in February 2017; unfortunately, his illness runs in his family, as his uncle has also been diagnosed with kidney failure. Michael is currently on dialysis, which takes a toll on his quality of life and leaves him very tired. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical for his survival.

During this difficult time, Michael is thankful for the love and support of his family and friends. He has 12 children and 12 grandchildren. Michael’s diagnosis was devastating to his family, but he finds strength through their presence—spending time with them is his true happiness. However, his illness often makes it difficult to participate in family events. When he feels able, he enjoys walking and exercising, but dialysis often leaves him too exhausted. More than anything, he looks forward to returning to full-time work, spending many more years with his family, and living a healthy lifestyle. But, right now, he needs your help.

The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Michael still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

When Michael receives his transplant, he will need to relocate over 190 miles to be closer to the transplant center as he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Michael’s illness has also made it difficult to work because he is often exhausted, so he can only work part time a few days a week, adding to the financial strain.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Michael. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to National Foundation for Transplants, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Michael Yates” on the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
