Amid these tough pandemic times, we’re writing with some good news: Mosaic Journalism in San Jose has survived — but we need your help to train this year's class of budding high school journalists.

We’ve got 16 students mostly from East and downtown San Jose anxious to learn reporting, writing and photojournalism, taught by Mercury News alumni and friends — Sal Pizarro, Maya Suryaraman, and Robert Salonga, to name just a few. We’ve got big, exciting plans that we hope to share with you later. We need your help to realize them.

Traditional news media and their foundations have shrunk. So we’re hoping you can make a contribution to fund Mosaic 2022. Every donation matters!

We know journalists’ pockets aren’t deep, so we hope you’ll pass this appeal on to family and friends who support our broadened mission: to give underserved students the opportunity to learn journalism and other skills, to amplify their voices, to cover news in our community, and to diversify the pipeline to the nation’s newsrooms.

Unfolding events make clear every day that quality, reliable and culturally diverse reporting is vital to our society.

Last year, Mosaic took initial steps toward expanding, launching a pilot school-year program. You can read some of the stories on the Mosaic website.

"I came out of that program learning so much, and understanding that this is exactly what I want to do with my life", said Tomás Miér, of his 2016 experience in Mosaic. He is now a staff writer at Rolling Stone.

Every year, our students’ growth and enthusiasm remind us: We’ve got to keep Mosaic going. As always, it remains free of charge to students, thanks to you.  We appreciate your support.
