The ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic has regrettably forced school closures around the globe. Children everywhere deserve the opportunity to learn and yet so many children in Zambia have been out of school this year. Modzi has been working hard to keep kids learning through this difficult time.
Modzi originated in an effort to create better access to quality education. We believe that education truly is the foundation for a better world and aim to break down barriers for vulnerable, inspiring youth. We have witnessed the positive effect just one child can have in their community and know that there is no better way to create lasting change than by educating our youth. Through our scholarship + mentorship programs, we're doing just that.
The stay at home orders in response to COVID-19 inspired our Modzi family to go green and start student gardening projects! Our post grad students took the lead on designing, organizing, and maintaining the new green space. This year it has been a great form of meditation and mental wellness as we all take it one day at a time.
In going green, Modzi learning extends beyond the classroom. Our students are able to share their knowledge with each other and discuss different familiar farming strategies. They also share the responsibility of tending to our gardens on a daily basis, organizing roles amongst themselves.We also have a huge focus on composting our food waste! In an effort to better our environmental impact, we take time to keep and compost food scraps from home. Ultimately, our food feeds our farm and helps us to grow new nutritious food for our family.
Another focus of Modzi programs this year has been art education. We truly believe that art has the power to create change! Science supports the idea that art is good for us, our minds, and overall public health in so many ways. Art has positive effects and the power to heal, which is why we so strongly support art education.
Our art education initiative helps students to express themselves and feel supported in their unique creativity. Through art, our students experience creative thinking and collaboration. Modzi creates safe spaces for students to reflect and explore artistic expression.Through the use of recycled materials, our students learn to think about reusing what would otherwise be considered trash. We love watching our students’ creativity come to life on canvas!
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health and economic crisis that has affected us all. Our students continue to show us unparalleled resilience, despite their education being so disrupted this year. As we try to stay positive together, Modzi hopes to keep creating safe spaces for learning both in and out of the classroom.
