$2,000 goal

Dear Fans and Alumni of Mosaic and Journalism,

We are just a few days and a few hundred dollars short of our goal. Donating takes only a few minutes. You don't even need a pandemic mask!

Here's the story of the 27th annual workshop:

After the coronavirus shut down normal life and work, some journalism programs like Mosaic decided to skip this summer. Then our national sponsor pulled out. We thought about bailing out, too.

Well, not for long. We are Mosaic Journalism of San Jose.

We were not about to miss the news story of a lifetime. When George Floyd’s death sparked a mass movement against police brutality and racism, we had two stories of a lifetime.  We couldn’t quit now.

So, we are producing the first Mosaic to be taught, reported, written, photographed and edited online and by phone. This year, we have 14 San Jose students. See our first stories online at www.mosaicjournalism.org.

We will post more soon.

Here’s how you can help. The loss of our annual, national grant means that this year’s workshop depends on local funders, Mosaic alumni, their grateful parents, and friends of journalism.

Here’s why: In a time when quality and culturally-diverse news reporting has never been more important, high school journalism programs are vanishing — particularly in schools serving underrepresented communities of color. East San Jose may soon be down to only two high school journalism programs this fall.  For many students in the South Bay, Mosaic is the only chance to learn the critical skills of journalism.

For 27 years, thanks to your generosity, our partners and our volunteers, Mosaic has remained free of charge to students.

We have a modest  goal: to raise $2,000 before July 4 to meet a local sponsor’s challenge grant. Your donation is fully deductible and will be administered by our fiscal sponsor, the Media Alliance, a Bay Area 501c3.

Mosaic has propelled dozens of students to careers in journalism and related fields. One of them, reporter Tomas Mier of the Los Angeles Times, delivered an inspiring online talk on interviewing methods to Mosaic a few days ago. At the Wall Street Journal, social media editor Margaret Lin added 1 million Instagram readers last year.  Kelly Yamanouchi continues her stellar reporting at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Former Monterey Herald columnist Marc Cabrera, from the first Mosaic in 1993, runs a similar workshop in Salinas.

Mosaic works hard to keep its alumni in the pipeline. Our three editorial assistants this year--Berenice Manzano, Skylar De Paul and Jocelynn Mijangos--are in college studying journalism or media.

We’d like to continue producing more students like them for America’s newsrooms. With your support, we will.
