$10,000 goal

In 2013, Dr. Rebecca Schaffer approached Open Wide Foundation about establishing a Special Care Dentistry program with our permanent clinic (est.2012) in Peronia, Guatemala. Soon after, Dr. Jeff Hicks got involved too and we all started working on our first trip for 2014.

Each year since then,  groups have gone to provide these specialty services to this very vulnerable population. And each year the group has become larger and provided more services. We began with a total of 90 patients seen the first year and this last September were able to see 333 patients in the same number of days.

All the providers have participated in providing training to the local dentists over the years including: Working  on medically complex cases, medical restraint training, mobility training, oral cancer checks, silver nitrate & fluoride varnish application, and rare cases and their specific treatments.

After receiving training, the local staff continued the continuity of care for these patients by visiting the individual care facilities and began providing year-round treatments for Special Care patients at the Peronia Clinic.

Help us continue to expand our reach of Special Care Dentistry by donating toward new equipment and supplies for services to our patients.
