Nadine Carter

Transplant Type: Heart

Nadine Carter is fighting for her life. At 45, she had her first heart attack. Unfortunately, heart disease runs in her family; Nadine’s father passed away from heart issues. After her condition worsened and seeing multiple doctors, she underwent open heart surgery in 2011. While the triple bypass was success, the surgery was not without challenges, and Nadine was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF). In 2013, she received a defibrillator. Shortly after she developed CHF, Nadine was also diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, as well as a rare cholesterol disorder that causes weight gain. As a health-conscious individual, these diagnoses were extremely painful for Nadine, who underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2014. After undergoing additional heart catheterizations in 2016 and 2019, doctors say a heart transplant is critical to her survival.

During this difficult time, Nadine is grateful for the love and support of her husband, Daniel, and their family and friends. Nadine has two grown twin daughters, one granddaughter, three step granddaughters, and a step grandson, for whom she has had legal custody of since birth. Her husband has had to take on more tasks with childcare, working full time and getting household chores done, because Nadine gets tired too easily. She has always been the one to help others, so having to ask for help has been one of the hardest aspects of her illness.

Nadine has a horse who she adores, and misses being able to hike, ride a bike, travel, and ride her Harley Davidson 3 wheel. She pushes herself to be active as much as possible, but each year she can do less and less. She looks forward to receiving a transplant that will improve her quality of life and give her more years with her family. Nadine wants nothing more than to be healthy so she can enjoy the outdoors and travel, take care of her grandson, and be able to live her life to the fullest. But right now she needs your help.

The average heart transplant costs more than $1.6 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Nadine lives almost 300 miles away from her transplant center and traveling back and forth for appointments can be expensive. When she receives her transplant, she will have to relocate for three months while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging for her and a required caregiver. She has been unable to work since her first heart attack, adding to the financial strain.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Nadine. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to National Foundation for Transplants, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Nadine Carter” on the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
