Cleveland has some of the worst health outcomes for mothers and infants. Twelve out of every 100 newborns are born prematurely, and the rate of premature birth among black women is 46% higher than white women. Pre-term birth is a leading cause of infant death. In 2016, 128 babies in Cuyahoga County alone did not live to celebrate their first birthday. Babies born to black mothers are three times more likely to die in our community. Neighborhood Family Practice (NFP) is a network of community health centers that delivers high quality, affordable, primary and preventive health care to people in Cleveland’s diverse west side neighborhoods, many of whom have increased risk factors for adverse health outcomes, including complications in pregnancy, such as premature birth and low birth weight. Research from The Lancet demonstrates that midwifery care can lower a woman’s risk of having a baby that is too small or born too early. The midwives at NFP provide compassionate and evidence-based care for women in Cleveland. It is our mission to care for women holistically, addressing their physical, social and emotional needs at the same time. NFP was recently recognized as the number one FQHC in Ohio for addressing health disparities. NFP continues to be a leader for First Year Cleveland, a program funded by the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Department of Medicaid to address infant mortality, premature births/low birth weight and the racial disparity between black and white babies.

All NFP certified nurse midwives are university-trained experts in providing care for women, including normal pregnancy and birth. They are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and the American College of Nurse Midwives, have completed further education in midwifery and other areas of healthcare, and are licensed in the state of Ohio.

Help us lead the way for healthier moms and babies. An ultrasound machine will allow our midwives to provide answers and create care plans for our patients faster. By offering an ultrasound in office, we can avoid common barriers to care many patients face, such as transportation, childcare, language and time.
