At first glance, you'll think it's too late. One look at this smashed face, the emaciated body, those blind eyes, and it just seems too late. Too late for us, as humans, to make up for the fact that this mangled dog was fending for himself in the middle of the road in Baltimore. That facial injury? The vets think it may have came from a hard kick. The skin-and-bones body? Neglect. So at first glance, this is just a sad, mean story with only helpless anger as an outcome. And yet. The vets took another look. This dog has great teeth, and appears to be only around 4. With medical intervention, that face can heal. "Palmier" is eating like a champ, even through the pain, so there's that all-important will to live. Today, we drove up to Baltimore to get him. He's now in foster care on antibiotics and pain meds, and he's in experienced, loving hands. Once he's relatively stabilized: it's back to the vet. From what we've seen so far of this little poodle/shih tzu,  he's going to come out of this and wag that little tail. We know we're not the only ones who just can't wait for this little guy's "after" picture. When good people come together, we can afford to make this right. Will you help us cover his medical expenses?

UPDATE on our Little Guy Palmier! (7/21/17) First- We have to make a correction to what we were initially told about Palmier. We were just notified by the shelter that there was a mix up in his story, after multiple media inquires they looked back at his records and immediately emailed us to correct themselves- He was not found in a bag.... just found in the middle of a road. The sweetheart of a Good Samaritan put him in the bag and took him to animal control because she didn't have a crate. She used to bag to keep him safe while she called animal control in Baltimore. This doesn't change fact he was in the road on one of the hottest days of the year less than half his body weight blind and sick!

Today he saw our wonderful vet at Burke Animal Clinic Pets. He had full blood work, ear cytology (his ears were a mess), an eye pressure test (to rule out glaucoma), aspiration of his lymph nodes (to rule out cancerous mass on his face), and a thorough full body exam. He may be older than first suspected by the other two vets- likely because his eyes were in such horrible shape before, but are getting better on the medication and now the vet can see cataracts in them. One side of his mouth does indeed have very good teeth, however the other side is severely infected and eventually all the teeth on that side need to be removed. His face is badly infected and has thickened skin from being left untreated.

He has lost weight since his other vet visits, so we are changing his food. His back is very painful so he is on more pain meds. They were able to clip the hair on his face to make him more comfortable. We now await the results of his testing, which will come back Monday.

Throughout this he was just the sweetest boy ever! Palmier is now resting comfortably in his foster home. As you can see from this pic, he is tuckered out and snoring peacefully. Thank you for sharing his story and for the huge huge outpouring of love and support. We will keep you posted on his prognosis!
