Nick Johnson
Transplant Type: Kidney
Nick Johnson is awaiting a new lease on life. He was diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy over ten years ago. The disease progressed slowly until his kidneys began to fail at the end of 2019. By May 2020, he had developed End Stage Renal Failure, and doctors now say a kidney transplant is necessary for his survival. While awaiting his transplant, he endures regular dialysis treatments, which take a toll on his quality of life.
This has been a difficult time for Nick and his wife, April, and their two sons. He is grateful for their love and support, but wishes they did not have to be so concerned about his health. Before his condition began to decline, Nick enjoyed kayaking with his family and playing guitar, but these days his activities are extremely limited. He looks forward to being healthy enough to be free of dialysis and to spend many more years with his family, but right now, he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Nick’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price. The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplants costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Nick lives over 150 miles from the transplant center, and he incurs substantial expenses each time he visits for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. Because of his health challenges, he can no longer able to work, adding to the financial strain.
