"The National Ocean Sciences Bowl takes learning outside of the classroom in ways I never imagined. I have seen how many things I [learned] sitting at a desk apply to the real world. This program has gotten me motivated to pursue a career in a scientific field more than anything I experienced in a classroom." – past participant, Lake Sturgeon Bowl, Wisconsin

For 25 years, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) has offered high school students a unique way to learn about the ocean and the important role it plays in the health of our planet and people, including in climate regulation, severe weather, human health, food security, and our economy.
While the heart of the NOSB is an academic competition, additional enrichment activities have become trademarks of the program, such as our summer award trips which offer teams unique, experiential hands-on field and laboratory experiences that enhance classroom study and build upon the knowledge they gained in preparing for the competition. Provided as prizes to reward the hard work and perseverance of the top two placing NOSB Finals Competition teams, the trips expose students to science professionals and career opportunities, while enriching their knowledge and understanding. With greater appreciation for the natural world and an understanding of the challenges facing the global ocean, many students become self-driven marine stewards.
In 2020 and 2021, the award trips were replaced with exclusive opportunities for top teams to talk to leaders in the ocean science community about ocean issues, their career paths, and more due to the ongoing public health concerns surrounding COVID-19. We want to bring these award trips back in 2022, however, reductions in federal and reserved funding for the upcoming competition year, plus increased costs on goods, services, and COVID-related safety measures, mean our budget is stretched thin. Currently we have no support for in-person summer award trips. If we are to reinstate these important experiences as prizes for the achievement of our top teams at the 2022 Finals, we need the help of our NOSB community.
Please consider making a $50 tax-deductible donation to the NOSB today (although any amount is appreciated), joining many NOSB students, families, teachers, staff and volunteers who also pledge their support for the program. You will help us raise funds for our 2022 national Finals competition first and second place award trips, allowing NOSB students to deepen their appreciation for and breadth of knowledge of ocean science and potential schooling and career opportunities.
