Support the National Ocean Sciences Bowl

Students in many parts of the U.S. lack easy access to our ocean and beaches. Of those that spend time recreating along our shores, how many are aware of the vast array of ecosystems—from shallow to deep—beneath the waves or understand the threats that our changing world and human footprint pose for the unique life within them?  Students need opportunities to learn about and experience the ocean so that they can appreciate how critical the ocean and its many resources, including marine life, are to human health, well-being, and our sustainable future. Unfortunately, fewer than half of U.S. schools offer a formal course in earth, environmental or ocean science, which leaves ocean literacy and education to programs like the National Ocean Sciences Bowl® (NOSB). 

For 23 years, the NOSB has given participants unique opportunities for direct interaction with scientists and others in the field, providing extremely important and influential connections through hands-on experiences, mentoring, and inspiration.  

Through preparing for and competing in the NOSB, students gain access to ocean science research, diverse marine environments, and experts in the field, all of which help build the personal and career skills they will need as our future leaders to weigh solutions to regional, national, and global ocean and environmental challenges. The ocean, as a complex system, also inspires the development of innovation, engineering, and technology skills our students will needed as the next generation of leaders to address the growing ocean issues of climate change, resource exploitation, and habitat loss.

Together we can broaden students’ awareness of environmental issues and the comprehensive array of possible careers that require or utilize ocean and environmental science –putting them on the path toward becoming our next generation of ocean leaders.
