#GivingTuesday for Floyd JAMS
A nonprofit fundraiser supporting
June Bug Center Inc.$450
raised by 10 people
$2,000 goal
The Junior Appalachian Musicians, Inc. (JAM) in Floyd was the first program to be developed by JAM and The Crooked Road in 2010. JAM is a nonprofit that helps serve 40 after school programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
In 2012, The June Bug Center for Arts & Education (JBC) opened its doors to the Floyd JAM program by providing a facility for instructors and students to meet free of charge. The JBC then grew to become a fiscal agent of the Floyd JAM program in 2014. This has allowed the program to serve more children through reduced or free scholarships provided by the JBC, pay for director and instructors, advertising support, bus transportation from all public schools in the Floyd district, and afterschool snacks.
Funding from these donations will go towards building enrichment for our Floyd JAM program, covering free scholarships to the program, and helping with instructors' pay. The Floyd JAM program is a Crooked Road/JAM program held every Monday from 3:30 to 5:50 p.m. for students in grades 3rd through 12th. Students learn Banjo, Fiddle, or Guitar in the style of old-time music of our region. They will learn traditional tunes and songs, learn how to play in a group, and perform. Each week, guest speakers and performers share 30-minutes of enrichment for our students. The next hour and a half is used for traditional music instruction.
