Every day, an increasing number of LGBTQQ youth are coming out, challenging homophobia, and improving their communities. Since 1997, the Outlet Program has been a critical source of support and empowerment for these courageous young people by offering them professional, caring support services, leadership training, community education, and advocacy opportunities. Outlet impacts hundreds of youth each year, and the effects are positive and long lasting. Most Outlet youth go on to participate in or create Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs in their schools, come out to friends and family, advocate for change, and help other LGBTQQ youth find their way. Outlet is changing lives and making a difference.
JASMINE'S STORY
Jasmin was referred to the Outlet program two years ago after she came out to her family and friends as a Transgender girl. As Jasmin began to transition socially, her family became increasingly resistant to her gender identity and presentation. Fed up with bullying at her high school, she decided to graduate early. On top of her gender identity, Jasmin was also dealing with depression, social anxiety, and poor self-esteem. Eventually, she ended up in the foster system, but remained an active Outlet participant.
At Outlet, Jasmin was able to find a community of LGBTQQ+ youth and adults where she was able to be her authentic self without judgment. She was able to make friends, become more confident, and learn how to advocate for herself. With the support of Outlet, she was able to get connected with medical and mental health professionals that specialized in Transgender healthcare. Today, Jasmin is 18, lives in a loving and safe foster home, works at a local tech company, and is applying to college to study Pre-Med. She has a stable team of adults supporting her wellbeing and thrives as a strong young woman.
