Patrick Burdette
Transplant Type: Liver
Patrick Burdette is fighting for his life. In 2009, his gall bladder was removed, and he never seemed to fully recover from the surgery. About six months after the operation, he began noticing swelling in his legs and problems with concentration and confusion. His wife insisted that he see a doctor, and he was eventually diagnosed with a life-threatening liver disease. Doctors say a liver transplant is essential to his survival.
Patrick is the first to admit that he’s made mistakes, but if he can make a difference in just one person’s life by telling his story, he is happy to do it. Although battling this illness has been difficult, he’s been a happier person by focusing on his health and his family during such a tough time. Post-transplant, he’s most looking forward to experiencing less confusion, which is a frustrating part of his illness. Thankfully, most liver transplant patients report that the confusion is gone immediately after receiving a transplant.
Unfortunately, Patrick’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $878,000. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. He will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to his survival as the transplant itself.
When he visits his transplant center for evaluations and check-ups, Patrick must travel 50 miles from his home, incurring substantial travel expenses. He enjoyed his job in the insurance industry, but his declining health forced him to stop working, adding to the financial strain.
What if your life depended on the compassion and generosity of others?
The National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve Patrick’s growing burden of expenses. NFT has been assisting transplant patients with fundraising support for more than 35 years. Your gift will enable NFT to provide Patrick with the financial support he desperately needs.
