Paul Richardson
Transplant Type: Double Lung
What if you struggled to breathe every day? That is the case with Paul Richardson. He is fighting for his life. During such a challenging time, Paul is thankful for the love and support of his friends, family, and his wife, Sondra. Paul and Sondra were high school sweethearts and have been married for 46 years. They are the proud parents of two devoted children and they love spending time with their four grandchildren (ages 3, 5, 13, and 15).
Paul enjoys landscaping, gardening, fishing and home improvement projects. Sadly, Paul is unable to perform many of these activities. In 2005, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), despite not having any family history of this chronic disease.
Paul needs your help. Paul and Sondra live 141 miles away from the transplant center. For six months to a year, they will need to temporarily relocate to the Durham area to begin an intense pulmonary rehab program before the transplant can take place. They could possibly be in Durham for a year or longer. During Paul’s recovery they will incur substantial travel, food, and lodging expenses.
Doctors say a double lung transplant is critical to his survival. The average double lung transplant surgery costs over $1 million, and that’s only the beginning! Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant cost, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. Post-transplant medications are very expensive and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. For the rest of his life, Paul will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications.
He looks forward to having new lungs and not being on oxygen 24/7. He also can’t wait to live a more active and healthy lifestyle. But right now, Paul desperately needs your help.
