Just before the trade deadline, the Cubs traded for Aroldis Chapman in an attempt to win it all this year. In doing so, they sent the message to fans young and old, and to survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence -- that your fastball speed is more significant than character, than choking the mother of your child, firing a gun eight times and then issuing a bizarre series of non-apologies.

This decision shows that what they are willing to sacrifice in order to win more games: their legitimacy as role models for fans, both t-ball players and adults who cheer for the Cubs. But here’s the thing: they are still role models.  Fans are still watching and while we may not explicitly emulate their behavior, at the end of the day they still influence and to a certain extent, reflect the views of their fans.

This week, fans of the team stepped up to the plate to voice their dissatisfaction.  Inspired by Caitlin Swieca, they are responding to the news around Chapman with a Twitter campaign that benefits local organizations serving victims of domestic violence.  Caitlin challenged fellow Cubs fans to donate $10 for each Chapman save this season and the Cubs fans have responded positively in a very meaningful way.
