Hello, As Vice President of Board of Directors for DeKalb Habitat for Humanity please join us as we continue to build hope for families, seniors, veterans and disabled individuals in our community. With every Habitat home built the cycle of substandard housing is closer to being permanently ended. This year we are working to raise funds for this Military Family.
Meet Tokela. Tokela is in the Air Force Reserves and a single mother of five, ranging in ages from 8 years to 23 years old. Her job in the Air Force is in transportation, where she is responsible for configuring the load plan for aircrafts.
She has been deployed to Kuwait and Katar and has been notified that she will be deployed again April 2021. Every time Tokela receives her orders to serve, she has to pack up her kids, apartment, and life. She has to find a storage facility to keep her things, and family to watch her kids. The family has been forced to move three times since 2016. All Tokela wants is stability. The peace of mind that comes with knowing her family has a decent, affordable place to call home; the comfort in knowing that her children will not have to start again at another school. She has experienced firsthand the effects of constantly uprooting your children time and time again with one of her children not graduating on time. With her own home, Tokela won't have to worry about where her stuff or her kids are. She won't have to find a new place to live upon her return. Tokela will always have her own HOME to return to after serving our country.
Help us give Tokela and her kids the stability they want and deserve. The average cost of one of our homes is $75/sq. foot. We are asking you to "buy the foot" to raise enough money to "buy" her dining room. Studies show that families that sit down and eat together have higher graduation rates, increased levels of stability, and increase the feelings of family connectedness. Our dining rooms are typically 40 sq. ft., which would equate to $3,000. Would you consider helping us create family space for Tokela and her kids?
Our homeownership program allows for low to moderate income families to own their own home. Our homes are not free. Families qualify for a 30 year, zero-equivalent mortgage and must complete 250 hours of sweat equity. Tokela has been in our program since 2016 and we hope to put her in her own home in 2020. This will give her time to get settled in her home and enjoy plenty of meals around the table before she is deployed again in April 2021.
Will you join us in making her dream a reality?
This is my first year participating in Georgia Gives Day as VP Board of Directors and I am very excited of being a part of this great mission!! I am graciously asking for your donations to Habitat for Humanity DeKalb in support of our Military Family this year. I've chosen this nonprofit because their mission means a lot to me and the community that I live in and I hope you'll consider contributing as a way to celebrate with me. Every little bit will help me reach my goal of $3,000. I've included information about Habitat for Humanity DeKalb below.
Sincerely,
