This has been an odd season. Things like gathering, fellowship, connection have all but become things we used to do. Hugs and holding hands, kisses on the cheek and forehead and sitting closely next to loved ones are things we remember, but some are unable to now do. We all have had to deal with less of these things and it has affected our senior citizens more than most know. The members at the Lou Walker Senior Center are no different. Many have missed births and parties and church services and homegoing celebrations, along with the everyday connection of coming to the Lou Walker Senior Center and seeing friends and socializing and being a part of a community of their peers.
With the generous support of the community, DeKalb For Seniors, Inc. has been able to continue supporting the Lou Walker Senior Center during this season and are excited to be able to celebrate when the center reopens. In the meantime, we still need your support. We still need to make sure that online activities still occur, that drive through or outside gatherings are still fun, safe and engaging, that our caregivers group still has resources to support people taking care of their parents, spouses or children – and sometimes all three.
Since 2003, DeKalb For Seniors, Inc. has been a fundraising and advocacy resource for the Lou Walker Senior Center. The past year and a half has proven to be a year where our services are needed more than ever. Doing things differently requires extra resources and we are committed to continuing our mission and providing those resources.
The center will reopen, and we have made a commitment to be there now and when it does. We know it’s going to be different and there are some people that will be missed. We will miss Mr. Andrew who always sat at the end of the table near the cafeteria and greeted everyone and helped whenever and wherever necessary. We will miss Ms. Katherine who greeted everyone at the front desk with a smile and a kind spirit. We will miss Quincy who was part of the performing arts group and always gave us an outstanding performance. We will miss Mr. J.R. who was always dressed to the nines and was colored coordinated from head to toe and others who will not be there with us.
So, we need your help. Please consider supporting our efforts by donating to our organization so that we may continue to support those who have supported us and our communities for so many years. We thank you, and the members of the Lou Walker Senior Center thank you.
