Rena McIntyre
Transplant Type - Kidney
In 2010, Rena was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition that caused scar tissue on her kidneys. Over the years, her health has worsened, eventually leading to a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease. Doctors now say a kidney transplant is necessary.
While awaiting her transplant, she endures regular dialysis treatments, which take a toll on her quality of life. This has been a difficult time for Rena and her family. She looks forward to overcoming this health battle so she can move forward to lead a normal, healthy life. But right now, she needs your help.
The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant.
When she receives her transplant, Rena must temporarily relocate 120 miles from her home to be near the hospital during the recovery period, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging. Because of her declining health, she can no longer work, adding to the financial strain.
On top of all of these financial concerns, Rena has to worry about the fact that she will lose her current health insurance in April of 2015, and she is not eligible for supplemental insurance with Medicare in Ohio because of her age. Even though Medicare will pay 80 percent of her transplant-related costs, the remaining 20 percent will be a staggering amount.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Rena. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Ohio Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazens Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Rena McIntyre" on the memo line.
Thank you for your generosity!
