Transplant Type: Double Lung

Robin Thomas is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2000, she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, a rare, inflammatory disease that attacked her lungs. Her diagnosis came as a shock, as there is no family history of lung disease. Robin’s lung function has declined since her diagnosis, and she relies on supplemental oxygen in order to breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is her only hope for survival.

During this difficult time, Robin is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends. She has joint custody of her 11-year-old great-niece, and her illness makes it difficult to be as active as she needs to be. Robin enjoys being with her family and friends, but the majority of them live in other states, and traveling there is now very difficult. Simple activities like going for a walk in the park or on the beach are impossible for her, and she misses those things. Robin looks forward to receiving a transplant that will save her life and free her from supplemental oxygen. She wants nothing more than to be healthy so she can have a normal life, travel to visit her family, attend cookouts and social gatherings, and being able to talk without gasping for air. But right now, she needs your help.

The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

When Robin receives her transplant, she will need to stay near her transplant center while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Robin was an Army Corporal and spent 32 years in service to the federal government. Her health forced her to retire, further adding to her financial burdens.
