Please help us raise money for two new infrastructure projects that were started by communities that are part of our larger capacity-building program on the island of La Gonave*.

--------------------------

The first project is a road-paving project that was started by an elected official and a community-based organization that is based in the 6th communal section of La Gonave called Petit-Anse.

After realizing they could not depend on the central government and could no longer wait for an NGO (non-governmental organization) to pave an important path that leads from the center of the communal section to an important wharf on the coastline, the community of Petit-Anse decided to come together to take care of it themselves. Individual residents and members of the diaspora gave what they could (money, cement, rocks, labor, etc.), while local authorities started re-directing (re-prioritizing) local tax revenue and aid money that was being offered to the communal section for short-term, unsustainable "relief" activities to support the road-paving project instead. To date, the community has paved over 2 kilometers of the road themselves! We hope to be able to offer them a matching grant that, when combined with local resources, will allow them to pave the remaining 1.2 kilometers of the road and finish the project entirely.

--------------------------

The second project is the rehabilitation of a rainwater collection system that is managed by a community group called GPDN, which is based in the 3rd communal section of La Gonave called Gran Sous.

The rainwater collection system was built by the community to provide residents with a more dependable source of water. Since the completion of the project in 2013, a group of community leaders have been able to successfully manage and maintain the facility, and also turn it into a source of income for the community. They have used revenue from the collection of water by residents to launch a handful of other projects that benefit the community, including a community garden that feeds the children that attend the local school and a savings and lending circle for members of the greater community. We are hoping to encourage this community group's initiative and entrepreneurship by providing them with technical support (expertise) as they replace the gutters and work to repair the rainwater collection system more permanently.

--------------------------

* These projects have been started by community groups and local leaders that are part of our multi-year, island-wide leadership and local capacity-building program on La Gonave. The program aims to strengthen the leadership skills and organizational management capacity of local leaders and locally elected officials on the island of La Gonave in order to help them have greater control over their development, improve quality of life on the island, and turn La Gonave into a hub of community-driven development.

Providing technical and financial support to these two community-led projects will help our partners gain practical experience in organizing and implementing development projects. It will also increase their understanding of community-driven development and their commitment to it, as well as inspiring other communities to take the same initiative.

Please make a contribution today. We rely on donors like you for the majority of our funding. In fact, 85% of Roots of Development's budget comes from individual donors. Help us make this year's Giving Tuesday a success. Thank you!
