He's here! Now for the HW
Douglas has arrived at Homeward Trails! He is finally in the care of our caring and compassionate team, and we're all looking forward to what the future may have in store for this sweet boy. However, before anything else happens, we MUST get him the heartworm treatment he needs RIGHT AWAY!
Left untreated, heartworms will grow and multiply inside the body and eventually cause the heart and lungs to fail. Left untreated, dogs die. But that doesn't have to be the case for Douglas! There is treatment for heartworm disease, but it is expensive. That's where we (and you!) come in.
Douglas shouldn't have to suffer because he was denied access to heartworm preventatives. He didn't choose the cards life dealt him. And he deserves a shot at a better future filled with love (not worms).
Douglas has not had an easy life so far. Being a stray in rural Virginia, means he has had to live off scraps, deal with harsh weather, and untreated medical issues. It must have taken incredible strength and resilience for him to survive this long. He is only 30 pound and has such a sweet disposition it is hard to imagine how he managed so long without care. Despite his rough start to life this 3-4 year old, Beagle has managed to make his way through without losing his spirit. He loves attention and is good with other dogs, cats, and humans. He has such a big heart but unfortunately he also is heartworm positive.
Heartworms left untreated can be deadly. Fortunately he was rescued in time where he can be treated and live the long, healthy life he deserves but we need your help to make sure that happens. This sweet boy has been through too much for his story to end here. Please help him get better so he can find a loving home that will make sure he can thrive. Please note that the sending shelter has generously sent sponsorship towards part of the HW treatment but we still need to cover the rest, and basic vetting/care.
