South West Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV)

Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV) is a community-based nonprofit with a mission to improve the environment and strengthen the economy of Southwest Detroit. 

Your generous donations will help SDEV mitigate the continued damage from environmental pollutants, remove the concrete from our community garden, support our community gardens summer and fall produce distribution program, aid in furthering our environmental education initiatives, create a rain garden which will help us with flood water management and attracting pollinators, and so much more.

Residents of Southwest Detroit bear a heavy burden of the industrial activity in the area . To put it in perspective:

-More than 150 sites in Southwest Detroit release harmful chemicals and particles into   the air.       

-5.5% of annual deaths in southwest Detroit are related to harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

-Respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, kidney failure and cancer are some of the negative impacts of environmental pollution faced by the residents.

-Hospitalization rates due to asthma in Southwest Detroit and nearby areas is nearly triple as compared to our state average. 

Southwest Detroit is a vibrant community with incredible potential to grow and help lead in city-wide revitalization efforts. SDEV's programs, through our funder support, directly impact low-income families and children and a richly diverse population. Our mission improves what is possible for the future of our neighborhoods - creating a healthier, cleaner, and greener Detroit.

Over the years, SDEV has managed initiatives in the areas of contaminated site redevelopment, environmentally sustainable practices, pollution prevention, illegal dumping prevention, air quality, land use, urban agriculture, green stormwater infrastructure, neighborhood beautification, environmental justice, and environmental education. The organization researches complex issues and provides information to local businesses and residents in an effort to create an informed bilingual citizenry to participate and take action in decisions that impact their quality of life.
