EXCITING NEWS!!! Brett has been accepted through the 4 Paws for Ability organization to have his VERY OWN SEIZURE ALERT DOG! After a thorough application process, he was selected to receive his very own companion who can alert those around him when he is having a seizure. From December 1, 2019 to December 5, 2019, Brett was hospitalized at Rady’s Children’s hospital having uncontrollable seizures - 60 seizures in 5 days. Please read the message below from Brett.
Hi! My name is Brett and I am 9 years old. I started having seizures when I was 18 months old. When I was little, I was having over 600 seizures per month. After failing many epilepsy medications, my parents searched high and low for answers and treatments to control my seizures. It worked, and I went 5 years with pretty good seizure control and I was able to keep growing and progressing. I learned to talk and to read - without all those seizures, I was able to remember what I learned in school. On July 20th 2019, my seizures came back with a vengeance. 911 calls and ambulance rides and many, many doctor appointments and EEG procedures to try and figure out why my seizures had increased. I tried more seizure medications and unfortunately they only increased my seizures instead of decreasing them. Right now, I’m under 24-hour supervision I can’t be alone in my room playing my iPad or even go to the bathroom without my mom or dad with me in case I have a seizure. I need a seizure dog to watch over me and alert my parents when I’m having a seizure. My dog would also sleep with me and watch over me in the night since most of my scary seizures are when I’m sleeping. Right now, I’m having 5-7 seizures a day/35-45 seizures per week. They say my dog will detect a scent and even begin to detect my seizures before they happen. Other than alerting my parents of my seizures or detecting them, my dog can also help prevent an injury during the seizure. Pretty cool, huh?
I also have autism, which means my brain works differently than your brain. My dog can not only be a seizure alert dog, but he can gain some special skills for my autism too. My mom says that fundraising for my dog will take time and patience. She did the math and determined that we need 1700 people to donate $10.00 or 170 people to donate $100. Seizure alert dogs cost around $45,000 - $60,000 to breed and train my dog, and my family’s responsibility is $17,000. That’s a lot of money, huh? She says if you aren’t in a position to donate then maybe you could share my story or tell a friend. The sooner I fundraise my portion, the sooner I get placed in the final 2 week class with my dog in 2021. That’s how long it will take to train my dog and place me in the final class where I will go to Ohio with my parents for 2 weeks and attend the final training segment and then get to bring my seizure dog home with us. Exciting news! Again, if you could donate $10.00 or more and share my story I would be FURever grateful!
