Hi! Welcome to my fundraising page. My name is Shannon Wheeler, and will be interning this summer with the Uganda Village Project, a not for profit organization that works to facilitate community health and wellbeing in rural Uganda through improved access, education and prevention. I will be living and working with my fellow interns and community members in a rural village to implement life-saving public health programs.
Uganda Village Project targets five prominent public health issues in the rural Iganga District: family planning; water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH); malaria; obstetric fistula; and HIV/AIDS.
The organization uses The Healthy Villages Model, working at a grassroots level and partnering with rural communities to improve provision of healthcare and preventative health education to underserved populations. It is a three-year program designed to establish sustainable health practices and empower community members through education and community involvement.
In each village, we:
- Partner with and train Village Health Teams (VHTs), which function as a community’s initial healthcare contact
- Provide education on malaria, HIV/AIDS, sanitation, family planning, fistula, and other critical health topics
- Bring access to preventative healthcare (HIV testing, etc)
- Collaborate with local partners to create referral networks
- Distribute subsidized malaria nets and create sustainable network for the buying and selling of such nets
I am so excited about contributing my efforts to this amazing organization, but I need your help! I’m fundraising to help cover the cost of the trip and to make a donation to UVP. The total program fee is $2250, and I am hoping to raise an additional $1700 to offset the cost of my flights. Uganda Village Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All contributions to Uganda Village Project are tax-deductible. I appreciate every dollar that you have to give! Thank you so much for your support.
