Shaquille Crawley is awaiting a new lease on life. He was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) when he was only 3 months old. CF is a genetic disease, and his older brother also suffers from it. Shaquille has been in and out of the hospital his entire life. A few years ago, one of his lungs collapsed. His lung function continues to decline, and Shaquille requires the use of supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During such a difficult time, Shaquille is thankful for the love and support of his family and friends. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow him to breathe freely for the first time, improve his quality of life, and give him back his independence. He enjoys playing basketball, boxing, hanging out with his friends, and attending family gatherings—but his health limits his activities now. Shaquille wants nothing more than to be healthy so he will feel better, get his CDL, travel to new places, and enjoy time with his loved ones. But right now, he needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Shaquille lives three hours away from his transplant center, and traveling back and forth for appointments can be expensive. When he receives his transplant, he will have to temporarily relocate to be nearby while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Shaquille’s declining health prevents him from working, further adding to his financial burdens.
