Sheila McElroy

Transplant Type: Lung

Sheila McElroy is fighting for her life. In 1999, she was diagnosed with stage-4 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. Since then, her lung function has declined, and her illness now takes a toll on her quality of life. Doctors say a lung transplant is critical for her survival. Before she can receive a transplant, her transplant center is requiring her to raise funds.

During such a challenging time, Sheila is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends. Sheila has faced difficult times before. She is a widow, and has also had to endure the loss of one of her two children. Her daughter passed away in 2007, and since her death, Sheila has raised her five grandchildren as her own. They now range in age from 12 to 19, and Sheila struggles to be the active parent they need her to be. Her health prevents her from attending their school functions the way she would like, and she may have to miss Aaliyah’s high school graduation due to her health.

Sheila looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow her to breathe freely and improve her quality of life. She wants nothing more than to be healthy so she can be there for her grandchildren and be more active again. But right now, she needs your help.

The average lung transplant costs more than $785,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the cost of the transplant, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Sheila lives two hours away from her transplant center, and traveling back and forth for appointments can be expensive. When she receives her transplant, she will have to temporarily relocate to be nearby while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
