I am a Community Organizer and lead campaigns with Clean Air members in environmental justice neighborhoods in the City of Buffalo.

My world changed April 30th, 2014 - the day my daughter was born. Well, not exactly that day but shortly after. 

What world would she grow up in? How was I making it better? These are the things I asked myself as I pondered my life while working at City Hall. I resigned from my position in April of 2018, and followed my calling and firm belief that the work doesn’t take place at a desk in city hall but among the people.

One of those important questions was, is my work making it so my child won’t have to fight the same fight as me. Will she wake up and be able to breathe the air around her, drink clean water, run through open fields, and see the sky? Will she wake up in 10 years and worry about brown, black bodies the way I do?  

Join me for a minute and take a moment to envision why and what it is we are fighting for. When I picture a perfect world, we win.  That win looks like healthy soil, clean air and water in the community around East Delavan... with no worries or wonders if American Axle is causing families and their children harm. It looks like Tonawanda Coke completely cleaned up and workers at plants like Tesla treated with respect and justice.      

See… when I close my eyes and I see my daughter Nayeli running through grass almost as tall as her and laughing the way children do when they have not a care in the world. Then I look up at the sky and it is perfectly blue almost as if the clouds are smiling back at us, and I know all this was for the future generations. For her, for them. 

Today, I can’t imagine not being a part of Clean Air because of this vision, and because I have no choice but to win... so I can see my own child running through these fields as well as yours!
