$20,000 goal

This Giving Tuesday — November 30, 2021 — Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society will renew its commitment to help protect science education in communities where the threats from "academic freedom" legislation continue to challenge established science standards in schools and classrooms.

Together, we’re seeking to raise $20,000 to send one-year digital subscriptions of American Scientist to 700 high schools and to continue to develop and provide interactive educational resources, including access to authors to engage with students and teachers, to help deepen the classroom learning experiences through the magazines.

Donations raised over the $20,000 goal will be used to send subscriptions and educational resources to more schools. High schools that benefit from this campaign are primarily located in the following states:

Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia

What do Teachers Think of the Magazine?

According to a recent survey, 83% of teachers receiving the magazine responded that they hope to continue their school's American Scientist subscriptions through Sigma Xi’s Giving Tuesday campaign.

Teachers have been utilizing the American Scientist subscriptions from Sigma Xi with students in their classrooms and to enhance collaboration and professional development across departments:

The magazine is read by most of the members of my department. I have quoted information from the magazine in my lessons (I teach AP Biology). It is great to have this resource as our department budget would not allow us to purchase a subscription.”

  – High school teacher in Kansas

We use them to practice and develop CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) skills of our students in line of the Next Generation Science Standards that our state has just adopted last year. The articles are very interesting, peer reviewed, and students enjoyed reading the most up to date Science News/articles.”

  – High school teacher in New Mexico

I used the magazines to highlight current chemistry concepts that were being taught in class OR to show how chemistry is relevant to our daily lives.”

  – High school teacher in Michigan

I shared the magazines with colleagues. We read articles that related to our curriculum which sparked collegial discussions and generation of curriculum materials to share with our students.
