Sonia Joseph
Transplant Type: Double Lung
Update: Sonia received a transplant on October 23, 2019!
Sonia Joseph is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2010, she was diagnosed with Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung disease with unknown origins that gets progressively worse as time passes. Sonia’s lung function has declined since her diagnosis and she now requires the use of supplemental oxygen around the clock to help her breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to her survival.
During this difficult time, Sonia is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends. She is a single mom of one son and has three grandchildren, ages 2, 12, and 16—and her illness prevents her from being the active mother and grandmother she longs to be. Sonia’s family, including her elderly parents, worries so much about her. She looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free her from supplemental oxygen and allow her to live her life to the fullest. She enjoys cooking, shopping, and traveling, but her health prevents her from doing those things now. Sonia wants nothing more than to be healthy so she can resume the activities she once enjoyed and be able to play with her 2-year-old granddaughter. But right now, she needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Sonia’s declining health forced her to stop working, further adding to her financial burdens.
