Foundation Beyond Belief is a leading Humanist-based charitable foundation that deserves wide support. They have supported and encouraged our own service activities.
(Bonus! If you support them through our page, South Jersey Humanists are eligible for prizes!)
Their efforts include the following essential work:
Humanist Giving Program
FBB highlights 5 charitable organizations per quarter. Beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size, compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.
Humanist Disaster Recovery Drive
The Humanist Disaster Recovery Drive serves as a focal point for the humanist response to major disasters. Our purpose is twofold: to bring resources to those in desperate need, and to raise awareness of that need in the humanist community and beyond. During a drive, we provide information and an opportunity to donate to our selected beneficiaries, which receive 100% of donated funds.
Humanist Disaster Recovery Teams (HDR Teams)
HDR Team seeks to provide non-theists an avenue to assist impacted communities when disaster strikes. As it currently stands, a national disaster recovery volunteer program within the nontheistic community does not exist, and we are working hard to change that. HDR Team volunteers will travel to communities impacted by disaster to assist in recovery efforts while working alongside a secular partner organization. Prior to deployment, volunteers go through evidence-based training on topics such as the landscape of disaster recovery and emergency management, the importance of putting survivor's needs first, and volunteering within a humanist framework.
Humanist Service Corps (HSC)
In 2015, the HSC placed volunteers in Northern Ghana, where they are working to restore dignity to women who have been accused of witchcraft and banished to 'witch-camps.' Although the women are relatively safe from violence once they are in exile, the living conditions are deplorable. They do not have access to basic education and healthcare and they are unaware of or are unable to exercise legal protections under Ghanaian and international laws.
