The Dr. Doretha Pressey Southern Scholars Initiative is a 501c3 nonprofit scholarship and college completion program dedicated to creating access, equity, and success for students of color from low income communities in the rural South. We are motivated and guided by the legacy of our founder, Dr. Doretha Pressey, a passionate and determined educator who committed her life to generously helping those in need. Education, Determination, and Generosity were three of the core principles that exemplified Dr. Pressey's life and work and they have become the three major tenets upon which our work is based.

What is #Give8/28

On August 28, 2020, Southern Scholars will be joining #Give828, a national day of giving focused specifically on supporting black-led and black-benefitting organizations. #Give828 isn’t like other fundraising campaigns. This day takes place during Black Philanthropy Month and commemorates multiple important historical landmarks in black American’s march toward freedom:

●  August 28, 1955: 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by three white men, which became a “flashpoint in the civil rights movement.”

● August 28, 1963: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech in Washington, D.C.

● August 28, 2005: Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. The storm, which devastated New Orleans, inordinately impacted many of the city’s black residents.

● August 28, 2008: Then-Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black man to ever win the nomination and bid for the presidency.

#Give28 2020 comes at a critical time. The disproportionate deaths in black communities from COVID-19 and the recent killings and shootings of unarmed black people that have sparked waves of protests illustrate the critical need for resources in black communities. Southern Scholars is on the ground every day, working to level the academic playing field for students of color from low-income communities in the rural South.
