Give 8/28: Invest in Equity with Southern Scholars

Today, August 28th, we invite you to join us in celebrating #Give828—a day dedicated to supporting Black-led grass-roots organizations that drive real change in our communities. At Southern Scholars Initiative, we are committed to transforming the lives of students of color from low-income, historically resilient communities in rural South Carolina.

Over the past five years, we’ve awarded over $285,000 in scholarships and more than $10,000 in emergency aid, supporting 18 Scholars who have maintained an impressive average GPA of 3.4 or higher. Our programs, including world-class college completion advising, mentorship, and strategic partnerships, have been instrumental in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering our Scholars to pursue higher education and brighter futures.

However, like many Black-led nonprofits, we operate in an inequitable funding landscape. The 2024 State of Black Nonprofits Report by Giving Gap reveals that Black-led organizations like ours receive 76% less revenue and only 2% of major philanthropic dollars. Despite our undeniable impact, this disparity limits our ability to grow and expand our programs.
