On National Astronaut Day, we celebrate the courage, curiosity, and imagination of the men and women who have left Earth to explore the unknown. But every astronaut’s journey begins long before liftoff—not in a rocket, but in a book.
Long before they trained for zero gravity or studied navigation through the stars, many astronauts were wide-eyed kids holding stories about space, science, and possibility. Books were their first launchpad. They sparked questions, built confidence, and made the universe feel close enough to reach.
At Kids Need to Read, we believe that same spark belongs in every child’s hands.
Through our partnership with Uniphi Good, National Astronaut Day becomes more than a celebration of space exploration—it becomes a mission to expand access to literacy. We are honoring the idea that reading is exploration. Every page turned is a new planet discovered. Every story is a journey beyond what a child can see from where they stand today.
For many children, books are not always easy to access. Without them, imagination has fewer places to land. That’s why Kids Need to Read works to place books directly into the hands of children who need them most—through schools, community programs, and literacy events across the Southwest and beyond.
On this special day, we are reminded that astronauts don’t just explore space—they inspire us to explore possibility. And children, when given the right tools, do the same.
With Uniphi Good, we are turning National Astronaut Day into a shared mission: to ignite curiosity, expand literacy, and remind every child that they, too, are capable of launching something extraordinary.
Because every great explorer starts with a story.
