Everyone needs a consistent, supportive, and genuinely happy community. The Pacific Beach Coalition (PBC) has been that for me since I became a nomad in 2020.
This January, I attended the Annual Beach Planting Day in honor of MLK Jr Day of Service, where I co-led a planting activity with the attending kids. We potted native California Poppy seeds in TP rolls, prepped the land for these little pots, and planted them! I had such a great time with the kids, who were primarily from a local Girl Scouts group. I couldn't resist incorporating a bit of native plant education into the planting activity.
On this day, 110 volunteers kept all of this out of the ocean: 251 pounds of landfill trash 6 pounds of recyclables 1,013 cigarette filters.
Support this fundraiser so PBC can continue to hold events like this!
In 2024, I drove down to attend and capture the activities at WhaleFest for PBC's social media platforms. This is a photo of Julie (left), the lead Naturalist, and on the right of me is an awesome mother-daughter duo from the Foster City cleanup team. WhaleFest was in conjunction with PBC's Earth Day celebrations, where 15+ locations hold cleanup events.
WhaleFest was attended by ~3,000 people and featured a range of activities for kids, all centered on whale education, local organizational booths, and inspiring speakers. This was after a morning of beach cleanups and habitat restoration!
On this day, April 20th last year, 1,598 volunteers picked up: 1,591 pounds of trash, 357 pounds of recycling 10,716 cigarette butts. . .
AND removed 14,961 pounds of Green Waste, and planted 50 native plants. Within April, aka Earth Month, 4,905 students received the Whale Assembly by PBC Naturalist Greg.
What would our Earth look like if not for organizations like PBC! A lot dirtier, overrun with invasive plants, and less connected to nature is what I say!
This community TAKES ACTION for our EARTH weekly, INSPIRES children and teens through school field trips, school assemblies, and a youth leadership program!
I'm fundraising for the Pacific Beach Coalition so they can fulfill their mission to:
💙 Grow their Naturalist program, which brings ocean education to life at our monthly events
💙 Reach and inspire more young students at local school assemblies
💙 Increase training and leadership opportunities for volunteer Teen Site Captains
💙 Purchase native plants for restoration projects
💙 Recruit and engage new volunteers to become Earth Heroes
💙 Educate more people about climate change and inspire them to act
