Staci Segerlund
Transplant type: Bone Marrow
What if you were given the gift of life?
Staci Segerlund is fighting for her life. In 2016, she was diagnosed with lupus and was put on a drug known as Imuran. By August 2018, she began experiencing heavy periods and found herself hospitalized with a critically low platelet count. For the next few months, she underwent treatments and transfusions to help battle her low platelet count. Eventually, it was found that she was misdiagnosed with lupus, and the treatment she had received damaged her bone marrow. Staci continued to undergo treatments to try and halt her drop in platelets, and in April 2021, she was referred to Shands at the University of Florida. Shands found that her condition had developed into aplastic anemia, and now doctors say a bone marrow transplant is critical to her survival. While awaiting her transplant, Staci must receive blood and platelet transfusions twice a week to raise her platelet count.
During this difficult time, Staci is grateful to have such a strong support system. Her husband, Robert, her children, family, and friends have been by her side every step of the way. Two of her brothers have even stepped up to serve as her back-up bone marrow donors. Staci looks forward to recovering fully from her transplant so that she can go to amusements parks, swim, shop, and spend time outside with her children again. She is ready to have her energy back and be free from the transfusions. More than anything, Staci wants to live her life again, but right now, she needs your help.
Unfortunately, Staci’s new life comes at a very high price.
The average allogenic bone marrow transplant costs more than $1 million, and that is only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Staci still faces significant expenses related to the procedure. Staci had to stop working due to her illness. In addition, she and Robert will need to temporarily relocate to be near the transplant center for up to two months during her recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging, further adding to the financial strain.
What if your life depended on the compassion and generosity of others?
The National Foundation for Transplants is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve the growing burden of expenses for Staci. The National Foundation for Transplants has been assisting transplant patients with fundraising support for more than 35 years. Your gift—of $25, $50, $100 or more—will enable The National Foundation for Transplants to provide Staci with the financial support she desperately needs.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Staci.
If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the National Foundation for Transplants, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Staci Segerlund” in the memo line.
