North Star comes in 2nd for our region and size!
WOW! Thank you to everyone who donated. I am truly humbled to see all of you show up for North Star and the LGBTQ+ community in this way. With your help, North Star raised over $7,000 and earned an additional $3,000 from the Horizons Foundation for placing second in our region and size categories. We are excited to use this money to help bring on a new Center Manager, reopen the center, and begin offering in person programs to our community.
Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my rainbow, glitter heart.

North Star is Winston-Salem’s LGBTQ Community Center. North Star seeks to empower and enrich the lives of LGBTQ people in the Triad area. We offer various social, support, and educational opportunities for adults & youth.
North Star’s Youth Programs seek to create a safe space for LGBTQ youth to get connected and empowered! Our purpose is to build a strong queer youth community through social and leadership groups, educational opportunities, health & wellness resources, and community events.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented us from coming together at our center in downtown Winston Salem, we look forward to the day we reopen our doors and welcome our community back into our physical space with our programs for all LGBTQ people, including youth, families with young children, young professionals and adults, seniors, and everyone who is part of our LGBTQ community!
North Star Programs Include:
Youth Leadership Council (YLC)- This group holds discussions, works on ongoing projects, and plans Alt Prom and other community events. It also serves as a connection point for the high school GSA groups.
Youth Socials - Open to middle and high school students. We usually have snacks and play games or do other activities.
Youth Drop-In – Open to youth ages 14 to 20. Drop-in and hang out!
Youth Self Care Sundays – For LGBTQ and questioning youth ages 12 to 20 years old, facilitated by licensed counselors. Learn ways to take of yourself, find community, and talk about whatever’s going on in your life. This warm & supportive space is for you.
Alternative Prom Winston-Salem’s safe and supporting prom, organized by North Star’s high school YLC, with additional support from many community partners. Open to high school students in grades 9-12.
HIV/STI testing (free & confidential). Rainbow Yoga, Self-Care Nights Quinston (for young professionals), Bisexual Social & Peer Support, Trans Women & Trans Femmes Group, Gardening @ the AIDS Memorial Garden, QYA Book Club, Writing Night, Safe Zone training.
Since our founding in 2013, we have continued to also hold many other events and programs — art events, social opportunities, potlucks, movie screenings, workshops, happy hours, and more!
Your donation today ensures that we have a physical place to reopen for our community while we continue to provide resources, referrals, and support to LGBTQ people in the Piedmont Triad during the pandemic. This work is not possible without your support - we are so grateful for your donation!
