Steve Waddell
Transplant Type: Heart
What if you were living on borrowed time?
Steve Waddell is fighting for his life. In December 2018, he had a heart attack and underwent triple bypass surgery. Unfortunately, Steve’s heart was so badly damaged that he also needed to have a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implanted to keep his heart pumping. By 2019, he had developed incurable bacterial infections due to his LVAD and required medication and frequent hospital visits to monitor and maintain his condition. Now, doctors say a heart transplant is critical for his survival.
During such a challenging time, Steve is thankful for his family and friends who have been by his side every step of the way. He wishes they did not have to be so concerned about his health, but he is grateful for their love and support. Before his health began to decline, he enjoyed working, being active in and around water, and spending time with his loved ones, but these days, his activities are quite limited. He looks forward to the transplant that will allow him to be healthy enough to live his life fully with as few limitations as possible, but right now, he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Steve’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average heart transplant costs more than $1 million. And that is only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Because Steve must travel more than 150 miles from his home to the transplant center for evaluations and doctors’ appointments, he incurs substantial expenses for each trip. When he receives his transplant, Steve will have to stay near the hospital for up to three months during recovery, adding to the financial strain.
What if your life depended on the compassion and generosity of others?
The National Foundation for Transplants is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve the growing burden of expenses for Steve. The National Foundation for Transplants has been assisting transplant patients with fundraising support for more than 35 years.
