After living in Cincinnati for 18 years as a teacher, writer, and mother, Harriet Beecher Stowe used her Power of Voice to speak up for humanity.

The issues that Harriet wrote about prior to the Civil War, including inequities based on race, gender, and economic status, remain with us today.

In 2021, the long-awaited renovation has been well underway, with the original exterior revealed and returned to its 1840 appearance, sparking the question "What happened there?" from all who pass by. But we are not done! Hand-built period appropriate windows are due in Spring 2022 and interior restoration begins after that.

As we look ahead, we continue our commitment to expanding interpretation of the site's 20th century history, when the home was a long-term boarding house adjacent to Walnut Hills's Black business district. This work has already begun with our new award-winning outdoor exhibit Our Neighborhood Story: A Tour of this Walnut Hills Block which was installed this summer.

Meanwhile, we continue to offer educational tours for all age groups, thought-provoking programming, and community-building events. We encourage visitors to see historical connections and be inspired to make change in the present.

Your gift will:

  • Nurture the house as vibrant student resource
  • Cultivate on-site and online gathering places for adult learning and discussion
  • Develop thought-provoking programming connecting 19th, 20th, and 21st century societal concerns
  • Implement guest services improvements to the house and grounds
  • Facilitate historical exploration, raise awareness for positive change, support dialogue about social issues related to Harriet's legacy

Thank you for your support. We are writing the next chapter together.
