Susan Nelson
Transplant Type: Multivisceral
Susan Nelson is awaiting a new lease on life. She first became ill in 2015. Since then, she’s been diagnosed with short gut syndrome. Unfortunately, it runs in her family, and her mother suffered from the same illness. Since her diagnosis, her condition has worsened. Doctors now say a multivisceral transplant isnecessary. Susan will need a new liver, pancreas, small intestine, colon, and stomach.
During this difficult time, Susan is thankful for the love and support of her husband, Mark, and their family and friends. Susan and Mark have seven children and two grandchildren, and her illness prevents her from being the active wife, mother, and grandmother she longs to be. Susan is no longer able to play with her grandchildren or babysit them while their parents work. She looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow her to feel better and be more active again. Susan used to enjoy camping, riding motorcycles, and working, but her health prevents her from doing those things now. She wants nothing more than to be healthy again so she can eat without getting sick, no longer be tied to an IV, and be able to take part in the activities she used to enjoy. But right now, she needs your help.
The average multi-visceral transplant costs almost $2 million, and that’sonly the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
Susan lives 200 miles from the transplant center, and has to travel back and forth for appointments. When she receives her transplant, she and her husband will have to temporarily relocate to be nearby while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
