Tatiana Therosme
Transplant Type: Liver
Tatiana Therosme is fighting for her life. Tatiana is a psychologist in Haiti. In 2014, she broke her leg while riding her scooter to one of the hospital sites where she works. Doctors felt the leg had broken too easily, and tests revealed she was suffering from a rare liver disease. Since then, Tatiana has been receiving medical care in Boston. Earlier this year, she learned she has a rapidly growing tumor on her liver. Doctors say a liver transplant is critical to her survival, and if she receives a transplant her other medical issues are treatable.
Tatiana is a remarkable woman, who serves as a psychologist for the organization Partners in Health. She was born and raised in Haiti and works to shatter the silence surrounding mental illness. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Tatiana also began working to help women recover from the trauma of the earthquake and the epidemic of sexual assault, physical abuse, and anxiety that followed. In 2011, Tatiana was honored along with Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Melinda Gates, and many other outstanding women as one of the Women Deliver 100: The Most Inspiring People Delivering for Girls and Women.
Tatiana looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow her to continue her work. She wants nothing more than to be healthy again and have her energy back. Tatiana has spent her life helping others, but now she is the one who needs help.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $878,000, and that’s only the beginning. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Tatiana will have to temporarily relocate to the Boston area to receive her transplant and aftercare, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
