Teresa Slot has a new lease on life. In 1998, she was diagnosed with heart failure due to the chemotherapy treatments she received for cancer. In 2018, she underwent surgery to get a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) or “artificial heart.” Although the LVAD bought her some time, doctors said a heart transplant was critical to her survival. Thankfully, Teresa received a heart transplant on September 14, 2019!
During this difficult time, Teresa is grateful for the love and support of her husband of 40 years, Allan, and their family and friends. Teresa and Allan have four kids and six grandkids, and her illness has prevented her from being the active wife, mother, and grandmother she longed to be. Teresa is looking forward to fully recovering from her transplant so she can enjoy an active life with her family. She looks forward to creating many family memories like vacationing, hiking, fishing, and swimming with her family. Teresa can’t wait to enjoy the outdoors at the zoo and beach with her grandkids, go to garage sales and craft shows with her daughters, and be able to walk as far as she wants to without having to stop and rest. She and her family are grateful to her donor and donor’s family for giving her a second chance at life.
The average heart transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
