About This Fundraising Bucket
THE HESS FUND
As a part of the School of Science, Engineering and Health, the Hess Fund enables the purchase of small equipment, important to our research programs and upper-level courses, that would otherwise not be part of the operating budget. The funds can also be used to send students to professional meetings to present the results of their research.
Each year, students have the chance to present their research in either oral or poster sessions at regional conferences, such as the University of Maryland Baltimore County Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Annual Meeting of Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences. At a national meeting, such as the American Chemical Society Meeting, students again present their research, but can also attend talks from leading scientists in a wide variety of subdisciplines, attend networking events, and visit an expo that showcases the latest instrumentation and technology in the field.
Attendance at these meetings allows students to hone their scientific presentation skills for an audience outside of Messiah, and in some cases compete for top presentation awards. Students are exposed to many new ideas and become excited about the range of fields to pursue after graduation.
By making a gift to the Hess Fund, you decrease the cost of these opportunities for students and increase their potential for networking, building résumés and learning about different graduate programs.
WAYS YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
- $3,000 = small equipment for research labs
- $1,000 = registration, travel and housing for a one student at the American Chemical Society National Meeting
- $300 = registration and travel to a regional conference
Thank you for equipping and empowering our students to become lifelong learners!
