There is a growing interest in tech and video games among youth, but queer representation in tech is extremely difficult to come by, making the break into tech more difficult for queer youth, who might struggle to feel seen in the predominantly male industry. With this rising demand for opportunities to learn skills in technology, many marginalized demographics rarely find the opportunity to explore their interests in a welcoming environment.
In response, Maven Youth holds free tech summer camps aiming to provide technological training, representation in tech, a sense of community, and a safe space for queer youth, regardless of financial status. Every summer over the last decade, they have hosted camps across the US, allowing queer youth to connect and build community with other queer-identifying people in a no-pressure learning environment. Camps like these help queer youth feel seen, heard, and safe, during a time where policies are being put in place to limit LGBTQ+ rights.
In my experience as a Maven Youth camper, I felt a strong sense of community with other queer youth, and was able to learn how to make a video game alongside a team. For me, it was a space to connect and discuss queer culture, issues, and technology relevant to today, without fear of being judged or pressured. The queer representation in tech that Maven Youth showed me helped me feel more confident in pursuing a career in that field. I am grateful for everything that Maven has taught me about leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and I hope this opportunity continues to exist for a very long time.
With the current funding climate for programs that provide opportunities to queer youth, and a growing interest in tech, Maven Youth needs $25,000 of extra funding this year to continue hosting their free summer camps.
You can help today by donating $25 to help me reach my personal goal of $1,000 for Maven Youth!
Maven Youth's tech camp is more than just a summer camp -- it's the opportunity for queer youth to explore their interest in tech, video games, and art in a safe environment where they can find a sense of community with other queer folks. During the current political climate, programs like Maven Youth can make an even greater impact on queer youth's lives, especially those in states where safe spaces may not exist for them. With your help, Maven Youth can continue to do what it does best -- uplift queer youth and give them the opportunity to represent the future of tech & video games!
